Bio
I am Andrew Walker. I recently graduated from Rutgers University with a major in Information Technology and Informatics. While at Rutgers I began to code. I learned Java and mostly programmed in Eclipse. In one of my courses my team tasked me with creating an app for our project, since I was the only team member who could code. I already knew I wanted to program at this time, but this experience made me want to pursue mobile development. Since graduating Rutgers I've greatly increased my programming abilities. I've become very familiar with Android Studio, an IDE I used for several personal projects including Music Club Manager (now on Google Play Store). I'm using my knowledge of Java to get a head start in JavaScript, a language that I hope will open up many options for me. Now that I have all this experience under my belt, it's time for me to develop mobile apps professionally. I'll be writing on my blog and putting my personal projects on this site so that you can follow my journey.

What I Do
I am a mobile developer. As of right now my experience has mostly been with Android development, but I'm looking into cross-platform development.

Mobile Development
I am a full stack developer of mobile apps. The language I know best at the moment is Java, but I am currently learning JavaScript and it's going really well thanks to the experience I have. JavaScript will open up the door for me to get into React Native and cross-platform development.
Lifting
Throughout high school and college I wanted to get into lifting, but I didn't get the chance to until shortly after the pandemic began. I've been going to the gym five days a week and it has done wonders for my strength and confidence.
Music
When I was very young my dad would share his playlist with me. I've been very passionate about music ever since. My taste in music spans a large variety of genres and eras. If I had to describe my musical taste in two words, the words would be "objectively good". I took up piano in school and got to an intermediate level, but in college I became busy with other things and ever since I haven't really had the chance to get back into the instrument. After I land my dream job I'm sure I'll take up piano again and maybe even other instruments.

Kotlin is a programming language for native Android development. Although my knowledge of Java is enough to apply for many mobile development positions, there are many employers that can use someone who knows Kotlin. My plan is to learn Kotlin by using it to recreate a couple of personal projects in Android Studio.

JavaScript is one of the most popular programming languages, but it's one I didn't get to learn much about when I was in Rutgers. I've been able to work on projects without much knowledge of JavaScript, but now that I'm getting very serious about professional mobile app development JavaScript is looking like it might end up being a very important part of my journey. Learning JavaScript will allow me to get into React Native and cross-platform development, which will in turn widen my job options.

One area of development I am currently focused on improving in is front-end. As of right now I am more comfortable with back-end development, which I've gotten more exposure to since my days at Rutgers. However, working on personal projects alone has made me realize the importance of knowing the full stack. In the upcoming months I'll be spending a lot of time mastering HTML, CSS, and XML.
